1. What is the claim (or purpose) of the book?
Nickel and Dimed is a book in which the author exposes the lives of the very poor by attempting to survive in poverty herself. It is a narrative of her experiences as she worked various, arduous jobs just to survive. In the end, she had to quit because of her inability to keep up with her bills. She makes the argument that the rest of us need to be aware of the reality of those at the bottom. While she never explicitly mentions any specific reform or legislation to improve the situation, she says that the poor will eventually grow sick of their situation and try to effect change, and "we will all be better of for it."
2. What is your stance on that claim?
I agree with the author [<-- basic stance] that change needs to and will occur one way or another. I believe we are somewhat beginning to see it now, with the Occupy movements and the strikes that we hear about if we choose to pay attention.
